Function: An Introduction

Let us recall what is relation.

Function

Formal Definition of a Function

A function relates each element of a set
with exactly one element of another set
(possibly the same set).

he Two Important Things!

1.
"...each element..." means that every element in X is related to some element in Y.
We say that the function covers X (relates every element of it).
(But some elements of Y are not related to at all, which is fine.)
2.
"...exactly one..." means that a function is single valued. It will not give back 2 or more results for the same input.
So "f(2) = 7 or 9" is not right!
function function
(one-to-many) (many-to-one)
This is NOT OK in a function But this is OK in a function

Fraction: Equivalent fraction

"We might look different but we are the same"

That is Equivalent Fractions. Two fraction that appear different but have the same value.

How can we check if two fractions are equivalent fraction?

It's EASY!!! If you multiply or divide both the top and bottom by the same number, the fraction keeps it's value.

Check out this exercise to check your understanding!!

Fraction's Fun Facts

Do you know that fraction used to be represented by pictorial symbols?

The history of fractions goes back to the ancient Egyptians. However, the Egyptians did not expressed fractions as ratios such as 2:5 or 2/5 like we do nowadays. They expressed ratios in unit fractions.

What are unit fractions?

A unit fraction is a fraction that has a numerator of 1 and the denominator is a positive integer.
For example,

The Egyptians would write 2/5 as 1/3 +1/15

How the Egyptian represented fraction

The Egyptians wrote numbers (based on tens) alongside pictures called hieroglyphs.
For example, 1/3 + 1/15 would be represented as shown below:

Notice the man's feet is pointing towards the direction of writing (from left to right). T
When the feet pointing toward the direction of writing means add. Otherwise, it means subtract

In this case, it is pointing towards the direction of writing.

Notice also that there is a shape that looks like an open mouth (the ellipse). It refers to a fraction
